Laguna Beach Dress Code

Have you ever heard of the Laguna Beach moment that just won't die? If not, let me fill you in. It all started on a reality show called Laguna Beach, where a group of wealthy white kids lived their best lives in a picturesque coastal town. But one scene in particular stood out, and it has been endlessly dissected and replicated ever since.

In the scene, a girl named Kristin hooks up with her ex-boyfriend Stephen, while another girl named Lauren watches from a nearby balcony. As Kristin and Stephen make out in a hot tub, Lauren utters the unforgettable line, "What is she thinking? My mascara's running, and it's not even waterproof!" The moment was iconic, but why does it continue to captivate us?

Perhaps it's because of the absurdity of the situation – two girls fighting over a guy in a hot tub, while a third girl looks on with mascara tears streaming down her face. Or maybe it's because it represents something deeper – the insecurities and anxieties that plague us all in relationships, no matter our race or socioeconomic status.

But as a black person, I can't help but notice that this moment, and the show as a whole, is devoid of any people of color. It's a world where wealth, whiteness, and heteronormativity reign supreme. And yet, it has managed to seep into our collective consciousness, a cultural touchstone that refuses to fade away.

So why do we keep coming back to this moment, this show, this world? Perhaps it's because it represents something tantalizingly unattainable – a carefree, privileged existence where problems can be solved with a kiss in a hot tub. But for many of us, that existence is simply out of reach.

So while we may laugh and cringe at the Laguna Beach moment, let's also recognize its limitations. Let's question why it persists in our minds, and what it says about the cultural narratives that we consume and perpetuate. And let's strive to create our own moments, our own stories, that reflect the beautiful diversity of our world.
